CO 17 is CLOSED 20 miles west of Antonito due to the Menkhaven Fire

The Menkhaven Fire continues to burn about 20 miles west of the community of Antonito on Colorado Highway 17 in Conejos County. This location is also located about 20 miles north of the New Mexico state line and approximately 40 miles north of Chama, NM.

CO 17 will remain closed until fire officials assess the area. Officials will also assess the wind status. There is no estimated time of opening the highway at this time.

The fire is estimated at 197 acres in size and was reported around 3 p.m. yesterday. The highway has been closed since that time.

Air attack reported first thing this morning that there was no significant growth overnight. Firefighters and aircraft are actively engaged in suppression operations this morning. Five large, two single engine air tankers and helicopters are “hitting it hard” with retardant and water.

A unified Type 3 organization has command of the fire and more resources have been ordered and are on the way.

There is a Red Flag warning in effect for today, just outside of the fire area, which will bring high winds and lower relative humidity.
