Alamosa, CO – The City of Alamosa was just informed that further coordination is required
between the EPA and CDOT that will temporarily delay the demolition of the Walsh and closure
of 6th Street. The work anticipated for this weekend will not happen and 6th Street will be open.
The City will share any further updates as it becomes aware.
Alamosa, CO – The demolition of the Walsh building located at 617 Sixth Street, is scheduled to begin Friday, October 13th. Sixth Street (US Highway 160 East) between San Juan Avenue and State Avenue will be closed on Friday, October 13th. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be managing this project.
Demolition is expected to last 3-4 weeks. During that time, there may be full road closures or lane reductions. The parking lot adjacent to the Walsh will be completely closed for the duration of demolition. In addition, there may be periodic closure of the alley. The EPA is aware that deliveries and residential apartments need alley-access and will work with residents and businesses for access.
The removal action will include the cleanup and proper disposal of the asbestos contaminated debris. The asbestos contaminated debris will be kept wet to prevent any asbestos fibers from migrating. The waste will be loaded into the boxes, covered with the plastic liners, and sealed. The waste will be delivered to a nearby landfill which is permitted to accept asbestos materials.
