MARCH 29, 2023-CBI-Monte Vista, Colo.–The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting in Monte Vista on March 21, 2023.
In an effort to be transparent, the names of the officers involved are being released.
On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 12:35 p.m. the regional dispatch center received a call from 1007 S. Broadway within Monte Vista. At 12:38 p.m. the regional dispatch received an additional 911 call from within the home located at 1007 S. Broadway from another person. The caller informed dispatch that a man had two knives. This information was relayed to the officers as they were approaching the residence.
Monte Vista Police Sgt. Michael Martinez and Cpl. David Pino, both veteran officers, responded emergent to the scene. Shortly after arriving at the front door of the home, a man jumped from a front window and ran at both officers, swinging both knives, barely missing the officers. Cpl. Pino deployed the Taser and Sgt. Martinez fired his handgun. While retreating backward from the attack, Cpl. Pino fell to the ground and then fired his handgun. The man was declared deceased on scene. His identification will be released by the coroner’s office.
Cpl. Pino received minor injuries from falling. No other community members were injured during this incident.
Both officers remain on administrative leave, per MVPD policy. This remains an ongoing investigation so no other information will be released at this time.
We understand that events like these trigger many emotions from the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family, the officers directly involved and all of those impacted by this event.
Once the investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has been completed, it will be presented to 12th Judicial District Attorney Anne Kelly for review.
