The Monte Vista Pirates capped homecoming week with a huge win over the Trinidad Miners, 68 to 6. The Pirates scored early and often. They steamrolled to a 40 to 0 lead after the first quarter, added three more scores in the second, and two more in the third. Trinidad was able to avoid the shutout with a 70-yard kick return by Jayden Maxfield-Martinez in the second quarter.
Diversity was the name of the game for the potent Pirate offense. They had five passing touchdowns, four by Andrew Chavez and one by Kaden Mellott. Five different Pirates were on the receiving end of those touchdown throws – Esteban Lujan, Issy Medina, Addan Heredia, Khegan Gunter, and Jon Enderle. DeAngelo Archuleta added two rushing touchdowns. Khegan Gunter scored on a 48-yard punt return. Damian Lopez opened the 2nd half with a 75-yard kick return for a touchdown. And the defense picked up a safety to put two points on the board.
The Monte Vista Pirates moved to 6-0 on the season, starting 2-0 in Southern Peaks League play. They travel to Ignacio next Friday to battle the Bobcats. That game can be heard on 1240 AM and 101.3 FM KBGV.
