Fire Destroys Two Homes in Monte Vista

Monte Vista Fire Department

On March 8, 2023, at approximately 2:45PM the Monte Vista Fire Department was notified of a residential fire in the 700 block of Clay Street.  The fire quickly spread, fully engulfing two properties in the immediate area.  Law enforcement assisted MVFD with evacuations and securing the area to allow fire personnel to contain the fire to two properties. Both properties were considered a total loss.

The point of origin and cause of fire have not been determined, however, Fire Chief Pat Sullivan has requested the assistance of Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) investigators to help determine the origin and cause.  The Monte Vista Police Department is assisting in the investigation along with the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.  It is too early in the investigation to determine whether this was accidental, carelessness or intentional. That will be determined with the help of the state fire investigator.  Once the investigation completed, law enforcement and the District Attorney will review the information to determine whether charges are appropriate.

The Monte Vista Fire Department was able to quickly contain this fire to the two properties, preventing further damage or destruction.  One family was displaced but is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross and victim’s advocates.

This is an ongoing investigation that will take a time to determine origin and cause of the fire.
