Lady Falcons Take Down the Lady Beetdiggers to Notch First Win

The Centauri Lady Falcons tipped off their basketball season with a 59–28 win over the Brush Beetdiggers in the first round of the Mountain Top Basketball Tournament.  The Falcons opened an early lead by going up 18 to 2 in the first quarter.  They never looked back and cruised to the victory.

          The Falcons were led in scoring by Ashley Smith with 15 points and Hannah Curtis with 10.  14 of Smith’s points came in the first half.  When Smith cooled off in the second half, her teammates lifted the Falcons.  Amaya Smith, Lacey Johnson, Kailyn Polzin, and Caitlyn Creel each had 4 or more points in the second half to extend the lead.  Kashlynn Tadolini led Brush with 13 points.

          The Lady Falcons start the season 1–0 with the victory over Brush.  They also move into the semifinals of the Mountain Top Basketball Tournament where they will face the Durango Demons.  That game tips at 5:30 on Friday, December 2, at Centauri High School.

    The Centauri Falcon Boys opened their season win a good win over the Brush Beetdiggers, 52–41.  The win puts the Falcons into the semifinals of the Mountain Top Basketball Tournament where they will face the Cedaredge Bruins.

          Centauri led by one point after the first quarter and managed to take a 26–19 lead into halftime.  The Beetdiggers came out hot in the third quarter, scrapping back to take a one-point lead before giving it back to Centauri late in the quarter.  Centauri then extended the lead by outscoring Brush 15 to 9 in the final quarter to secure the 11-point victory.

          Chaz Holman led all scorers with 19 points.  Mason Sowards was the second leading scorer for the Falcons with 8.  Kaden Castrup paced the Beetdiggers with 12 points.

          Centauri starts the season 1–0 with the win, putting them in the semifinals of the Mountain Top Basketball Tournament against Cedaredge.  That game tips at 7:00 PM on Friday, December 2.

          In the other boys’ games at the Mountain Top Basketball Tournament, Cedaredge upset Durango, Ignacio defeated Olathe, and Dove Creek beat the Centauri JV.  The Mountain Top Basketball Tournament runs through Saturday, December 3, at Centauri High School.  The boy’s championship game is scheduled to start Saturday at 1:30 PM.
