ALAMOSA, CO. (June 3, 2022) –A special session of the Adams State University Board of Trustees resulted in termination of President Cheryl D. Lovell’s contract the morning of Friday, June 3, 2022. The unanimous vote came after several hours of deliberations during an executive session.

Vice President of Academic Affairs Kent Buchanan, Ph.D., will assume duties as acting president effective immediately.

The Board of Trustees and the Executive Council met throughout the afternoon of June 3, 2022, to determine next steps in the University’s leadership. “I am willing to step in as acting president for Adams State,” Dr. Buchanan said. “I accept this role because I have absolute confidence in our faculty and staff’s commitment to their profession and dedication to our students. Together we will keep moving Adams State forward.”

“This was not an easy decision,” BOT Chair Michele Lueck said. “However, we believe Dr. Buchanan and the entire Executive Council will transition to a new era with grace and skill.”

Chair Lueck appointed trustees Amanda DeLaRosa and Jennifer Mueller to form a search committee for an interim president.
